Bezzecchi Clears the Final Hurdle
Marco Bezzecchi is officially on the grid for this weekend's British Grand Prix after passing his mandatory medical examination at Silverstone on Thursday. The Aprilia rider, who crashed in qualifying at the Sachsenring on 11 July and suffered a complete, displaced fracture of his left collarbone, underwent surgery the following day and faced an uncertain race against time to be fit for Round 12.
A further procedure – cleaning a wound on his left knee – meant Bezzecchi entered the paddock managing two post-surgery complications at once. "Not 100%," he acknowledged in the days before the event, but the Italian made clear he had no intention of sitting out the race he won twelve months ago. Medical officials declared him fit on Thursday evening.
Bezzecchi's 2025 Silverstone victory came under dramatic circumstances: Fabio Quartararo had opened a 4.5-second gap before his Yamaha's rear ride-height device locked in the lowered position with seven laps to go, ending his race on the spot. What followed was Bezzecchi's first win since the 2023 Indian Grand Prix, and it made him the 11th different winner in 11 consecutive Silverstone MotoGP races. He arrives in Northamptonshire as the circuit's defending champion – and one of its most compromised entrants.
Three Riders, Three Operations
Bezzecchi is not alone in making a medical comeback this weekend. Francesco Bagnaia received his green light from doctors 24 hours earlier, cleared to race despite undergoing forearm surgery during the summer break to address a compartment syndrome that had troubled him since June. Bagnaia sits eighth in the championship on 143 points, 65 adrift of leader Jorge Martín, and acknowledged that Silverstone represents a critical opportunity to stop the bleeding before the final ten rounds.
The third altered entry is at Red Bull KTM Tech3, where Pol Espargaró slots into the seat of Maverick Viñales. Scans after Viñales' Sachsenring crash had initially suggested a manageable shoulder injury, but a more thorough examination during the break revealed an unresolved tear in the infraspinatus – a secondary rotator cuff muscle – ruling him out of Silverstone. Espargaró, who made his MotoGP debut with Tech3 in 2014 and already deputised for Viñales during an earlier 2025 absence, takes over for at least this round.
The Smallest Title Gap in MotoGP History
Behind the injury bulletins stands a championship unlike any in recent memory. After 11 rounds, 11 different riders have won at least one race – a season-long sequence of unpredictability that has kept the title fight perpetually open. Only 24 points separate the top five: Jorge Martín (Aprilia, 208 points) leads Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia, 194), Marc Márquez (Ducati, 190), Bezzecchi (186) and Fabio Di Giannantonio (184). MotoGP itself has described this as the smallest margin ever recorded between the top five at this stage of a season.
Márquez's position is among the season's most compelling subplots. Following his crash at Le Mans and subsequent surgery, he trailed the championship lead by more than 100 points after Mugello. Four rounds later he is third, just 18 from Martín, after his record-equalling tenth Sachsenring victory matched Giacomo Agostini's all-time mark for wins at a single venue.
What Friday Will Show
For Bezzecchi and Bagnaia, Friday's on-track sessions are as much fitness tests as performance benchmarks. FP1 began at 12:45 CEST, with the combined practice session that determines which riders go directly into Q2 – the top ten from Friday's times – starting at 17:00 CEST. Both riders will be managing pain levels across the weekend, and their pace relative to fully fit rivals will give the clearest indication yet of how much the surgeries have cost them at full race distance.
With 37 points available across Saturday's Sprint and Sunday's Grand Prix, the championship order can shift significantly before the paddock leaves Britain. Bezzecchi's primary target at this circuit is not repetition of last year's win but the points that keep him within reach of Martín heading into the final third of the season.
